Monserrat, Barcelona

Looking to escape Barcelona for the day?

For rugged terrain, beautiful views and tough treks, look no further than Monserrat.

Just an hours train journey from the centre of Barcelona, Monserrat is so easy to reach from Espanya Metro stop; the rolling hills and lovely vineyards that greet you along your train journey mean that time speeds by, and all of a sudden you’re there!

For the more hardy traveller, there are options to walk up the mountain, all the way to the stunning monastery, perched up high in the mountains.  However, if you’re like us, and you like to hike for enjoyment, not sport, there are plenty of walks you can do, which take in the breathtaking panoramic views of Monserrat.

We have actually been twice; the first time we took the cable car from the first stop at Montserrat.  Although it is expensive (the train and cable car will set you back 45 Euros, so ten more than the 35 Euros for the combined train and funicular), we can’t recommend this enough; the views are amazing, and for those with an iron stomach, it can be fun as well!  The second time we took the train and switched onto the funicular, a few stops after the cable car stop. The scenery was just as beautiful, as you climb around the mountain, all the way to the start of the hiking trails, and the monastery itself.

We chose to do the Sant Jeroni hike, which takes about 4 hours in total as a round trip; there are plenty to choose from, and you can just as easily spend a whole day visiting the monastery and church itself.  The walk was hard, but so, so worth it.  The views are incredible, and the terrain, although challenging, is great to walk.

Get ready to ache the next day, but once you’re over that, you’ll have lovely memories of your trip to the mountains. With plenty of spots to stop and look at the lovely view over Catalonia, Monserrat really is a must visit location if you have time during your trip to Barcelona.
